Dave and Kylie, oil on linen

Not for sale David and Kylie, 8x10, oil on Belgian linen

I painted this one to give as a gift to my son's lovely significant other, Sara. The man in the picture is my son, and the baby is Sara's little niece Kylie. I painted it from a picture that was taken at Sara's graduation celebration recently. Sara received her Master's degree from Boston University. She hasn't seen the painting yet since it has been drying, but hopefully she'll enjoy getting a painting of two of her very favorite people!

The Nook, Pennsylvania landscape, 16x20

"The Nook", oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 16x20

This is a painting I did last winter of a scene from the backyard of my old house in Chester Springs, Pa. I was never happy with how the painting came out, so I pulled it out this week and worked on it some more. I added some glazes, falling leaves and a sunbeam and it looks really pretty now. I also just discovered that my old house has gone on the market recently. I'd always thought I'd try to buy it back if it ever came on the market, but now I realize that I'm totally hooked on the blue skies and eternal sunshine that we have 95% of the time here in Southwest Florida. So I'll keep my lovely memories of Pennsylvania tucked away in my brain, and stay put here in the Sunshine state.

Old boat on the Intracoastal, plein air

"Tethered", 12x16, oil on masonite

This painting of a little boat on the Florida Intracoastal was painted en plein air last spring, when I'd first began painting. It has very soft colors throughout and broken color in the water. Since it is an older painting, I am offering it at the low starting price of only $39.00.

Breathtaking, bold impasto

SOLD
"Breathtaking", 12x16, oil on Raymar panel

I'd painted this a few weeks back, but wasn't totally happy with it. So I added the baby's breath to break up the intensity of the blue and redcolors and it finally came to life!

This is an example of what is hard about daily painting. In order ot get a piece just right, it often takes days and even weeks to perfect a work. To paint a piece in one day and post it as well, is difficult for me , and I know other artists who share my feelings.

Plein air landscape, Blackburn Point

"A Reflective Moment", oil on stretched canvas, 12x16

Our plein air group went out to Blackburn Point yesterday and painted at the bridge that spans the intracoastal over to Casey Key. For a change the day was sublime, with no lovebugs in evidence, none of last week's haze from wildfires to clog the nose and burn the eyes, and weather warm but slightly balmy as well. The trees in the foreground acted as a picture frame for the tiny splotch of Intracoastal Waterway and island that can be seen in the immediate distance. I pitted the warms against the cools, and I'm satisfied with the result.

My take on Renoir, 8x10

SOLD
"My take on Renoir", oil on canvas board, 8x10

If I can identify with the painting style of any of the French Impressionists, it is Renoir's style that I feel most comfortable with. Whenever I paint spontaneously, I feel that my paintings are in many ways synergistic to Renoir's style. I painted this one yesterday-my mother's day vase of flowers painted impromptu in order to capture the gift of red and peach colored roses from 2 of my 3 sons' gifts. When it was all said and done, all I could think of was Renoir's roses.

Big Sur 2, Impressionist oil, 16x20

"Big Sur 2", oil on canvas, 16x20 (Note: Please click on the painting to see more detail.)

I finally had a chance to paint Big Sur again-this time with just oils and no acrylics. I must admit that I'm hooked on oils. The ease and quick turn-around time that can be achieved with acrylics is a wonderful thing for artists that enjoy them. I frankly just can't get excited about them. I think the fact that it's so hard to paint wet into wet with acrylics (since they dry so quickly), is my biggest hang-up. I just love watching what happens when one color colides with another while painting wet into wet. The chance of making mud increases substantially, however, so I think that acrylics are the best choice for artists that have problems with mixing muddy colors.

This painting is not for everyone, but if you like juicy color and lots of texture, this one sure has it.

Final Big Sur, California impressionist painting, 24x24

"Big Sur", 24x24, oil over acrylic on masonite

I couldn't resist putting oil paint over the acrylics that I used yesterday. My husband liked it better before I added the wild color, but he's a man so I expected that response. I definitely feel more secure mixing color with oil rather than acrylics, (which I seldom use), and this version is more in keeping with my style as a colorist. It will be fun to do the painting again using only oils, but I won't have the opportunity to do that until my out -of-town company leaves next week.

Big Sur, California- 24x24 impressionist painting

"Big Sur", 24x24, acrylic on masonite

Back in March we took a trip to California, and traveled up the magnificent Pacific Coast from San Diego to San Francisco. I must admit that I was a total wimp as we drove along the twisting, curving narrow 70 mile stretch of mountainous highway that flanks Big Sur. Being afraid of heights, I was practically paralyzed every time my hubby stopped the car to check out the view. But my fear did not prevent me from taking a few photos. I have been wanting to paint Big Sur since we returned, but didn't have the time until yesterday, when I finally pulled out my photos and my paints. I painted this with acrylics as a practice piece for one that I'll eventually do in oils. I painted in the impressionist manner, using pieces of broken color which the eye integrates as a whole when the viewer steps back. The beauty of acrylics is their fast drying time, but I miss the stronger intensity of color that can be best achieved with oils. I can't wait to try this scene again with oils!

This is not quite finished, but if anyone is interested in having the first shot at purchasing it when it's completed, just email me.

On site at The Ringling Museum, plein air oil painting

"On site at The Ringling Museum", 12x16, oil on masonite

On Thursday, our plein air group painted on the grounds of the beautiful Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. We searched for a special spot, and settled on this little pink house that lies right between the John and Mable Ringling Mansion and the Rose Garden. It was a perfect site for the simple reason that we were able to paint under a canopy of banyan trees that provided adequate shade from the sweltering Florida sun as we painted. The 3 hours went by without even a hot flash! Here's a photo of the site...

I was a lot happier with the piece yesterday, but my husband did a critique on it today, and afterwards I decided to change a couple things. I should know better by now! It became much less spontaneous after I messed with it- as usual. The lesson is this: don't ask your husband's opinion about anything that you're painting!
