Paint-Out Event to benefit Alzheimer Assoc.

SOLD

"Dappled Garden" -Unfinished version of one of the paintings that I did for the paint-out on Thursday .

Yesterday was Summerville, an assisted living facility in Venice, Florida's first annual paint-out to benefit the Alzheimer Foundation.

I started painting at 9 in the morning and by 3pm I had completed 2 paintings of the same scene- one in morning light and one in afternoon light. A friend of mine was nice enough to snap a picture of one of the paintings while I was working on it, and I'm grateful that he did that because I never had a chance to take a photo of the finished paintings as they looked in the beautiful sunshine. I had just enough time to run home, frame the paintings, change my clothes and get back to Summerville by 5:30, which is when the cocktail party began. There was a wet paint sale held on the veranda under the moonlight, with art proceeds to benefit the Alzheimer foundation.

Happily, both of my paintings sold, and I am looking forward to next year's event, which will probably be even more fun and profitable for the foundation!

Myakka River at Dusk

SOLD Myakka River at Dusk, oil on linen, 9x12

I could have easily titled this painting, "Making friends with my burnt sienna". Instead I decided to give it a more romantic name, since I would like to sell it. Truth is, most Florida plein air painters think it's just fabulous to go out to the Myakka River and paint in the swamp with the mosquitos and alligators.

People who know me, are noticing that I've been having a lot of 'dark night of the soul' feelings recently. Most of which I attribute to dwindling hormones. But in keeping with a pervasive sense of moodiness I painted this dark, tonalist, abstract landscape over the weekend.

I do like the loose, atmospheric feel of it, however- and it also goes to prove that even I can make friends with burnt sienna and yellow ochre on occasion. If you'd like to purchase the painting for $75.00, which includes free shipping, just use the PAypal button below.

Simple Gifts, 16x20, oil on linen

"Simple Gifts"- 16x 20, oil on linen

Simple gifts seemed an appropriate name for this painting, which I thankfully finally finished today! The fruit basket, eggs, wine and orchids all seemed to indicate the sense of bounty and overall prosperity that we as a nation sometimes take for granted in these United States. I do hope the painting imparts a sense of thankfulness to viewers as well. We are truly fortunate to have what we have, despite rising gas prices and a falling dollar.

May everyone have a thankful, joyful and peaceful Thanksgiving!

Margaritaville- Revised- Plein Air

SOLD

Margaritaville, 12x16, oil on masonite (Note: Please click on the painting if you'd like to see more detail.)

What is the definition of Artist's Remorse? It's waking up the day after you've posted what you thought was a fabulous painting on the DP gallery for the whole world to see, only to realize that what you've really painted was a hemorrhoid.

Today I reworked Thursday's plein air painting a bit and even gave it a new name. Although, I do think it works now, only God knows what I'll think of it tomorrow.

The Tiki hut in the background was full of sun-loving revelers on Thursday- mostly tourists drinking margaritas and stopping along the path where we were painting to tell us all how wonderful we all were. No wonder I came home, drank a couple mango bangos myself and thought I'd created a masterpiece!

At any rate, this final version has a really nice Caribbean feel to it. The colors of the day on the bay could only be Florida or that one particular island. I was tempted to add the Buffett jingle to this blog, but I know it's considered gauche these days to put music to your blog.

Alas.

Boats on Sarasota Bay, Plein Air

SOLD

"Boats on Sarasota Bay", 12x16, oil on masonite

Yesterday, our plein air group met at Sarasota Bay again. I really don't like painting boats very much, but in the end I liked the way this painting came out. The challenge was to simplify the scene, which really meant you needed to eliminate a lot of "stuff" in order to have a successful painting. As you can see below, there was a lot of stuff in the scene that needed to go.

I knew I wanted the tiki hut in there, but beyond that I wasn't sure what to do about all the boats in front of the sand mound beyond the hut. In the end, I was happy to get rid of them! I like the fact that this painting came out loose and impressionistic.

Floral arrangement- Just Peachy

SOLD

"Just Peachy", 16x20, oil on linen

Talk about putting the cart before the horse... I began painting 2 years ago, experimenting on my own with watercolors and eventually moving on to oils. I'd never had a single drawing lesson or formal art training of any kind. Last week I took a three day drawing workshop and realized how many things I have been doing wrong in my painting! Things I knew nothing about relating to form, design, and composition suddenly came to light thanks to a wonderful teacher and friend, Julie Hanson.

Anyway, yesterday I decided to make some changes to this painting that I did over a week ago, attempting to utilize some of the things that I'd learned in the workshop. I do hope the painting looks better, so please let me know if it's improved or not.

This painting was done from a model inside my head, and I realize now that I should never paint anything unless I have either a real life model in front of me, or at least a photo. A lady described in an email a painting that she wanted me to create for her mother, based upon her liking a piece I had done in the past which had already sold. In the end she decided not to purchase the above because she felt there was too much red in the flowers. I used mostly pink and lavender in the flowers and no bright red at all, so I'm not sure what her monitor translated across, but this is why I rarely agree to do commissioned pieces. At any rate, the painting is quite soft and lovely and feminine in person and would make a lovely gift for the holidays, in my humble opinion. If offered in a gallery, the cost would be $500-$600. The fact that painters can offer high quality paintings Online is a wonderful tool for an artist trying to pay for her paints, but the problem of the monitor is still a problem that comes up every now and then, and I wonder if there will ever be a satisfatory solution to that dilemma. Hopefully most people realize the inherent value of purchasing directly from an artist and take this into consideration when purchasing artwork Online.

Okay. I'm done rambling. If you would like to purchase this painting, please use the paypal button below. Shipping is free within the United States only.

Mixed fruit in a blue bowl-$150.00

SOLD

Mixed fruit in a blue bowl, 8x10, oil on archival linen-$150.00

In this piece, I went for a Chiaroscuro effect, rather than doing the big juicy brushstrokes that I did on the organic vegetable piece. Since I just came out of a drawing workshop, I wanted to concentrate on form and values, so this painting looks much different from what I've been doing recently. I typically stay away from realism, since I find it too difficult to do with any competence, but I think the dark and light contrasts in piece are effective.

This piece would make a lovely gift for the upcoming hoildays, and can also be sold framed for a modest additional charge. Shipping is free if purchased directly through this blog.

Banyans on the Bay, Plein air

SOLD

Banyans on the Bay, 12x12, oil on canvas

I painted this en plein air last week on a less than ideal day. It was gray and drizzling slightly when I arrived at Sarasota Bay at 9 in the morning, but by noon the sun was shining. Early on the value of the sky and water were almost exactly the same, and everything looked flat from the lack of sun. By the time I got to painting the second notes on the lower half of the painting the sun was shining, and although I tried to keep the light temperature correct, I definitely got too warm towards the bottom.

Well, that's why it's called a study! This was painted with a palette knife only, for those who like texture.

Please email me if you have any interest in this painting.
