Cold but Sunny, Venezia Park, 11x14, oil on wrapped linenLast week I participated in the annual invitational Paint-Out in Paradise sponsored by the Venice Art Center. The weather was pretty good though a little inconsistent from day to day. Tuesday morning was pretty cold , but thankfully sunny. I was intrigued with the slice of sunlight through the shadows that lit up the bushes and bougainvillea at this house in the historic district of Venice. The huge palm tree that was creating the shadows on the foreground bushes kept hitting me in the face as I tried to paint.
Overall it was a good week, filled with challenges, and I enjoyed it. On Monday, the artists were treated to an inspirational talk by one of my favorite artists, Morgan Samuel Price. Morgan was the juror for the event, and although I knew that she would not like my fauvist choice of color, nonetheless, I painted the way that always do, without trying to please the juror. Morgan has beautiful brushstrokes and uses a palette of very believable greens, something that is very important for Florida artists to master. I'm still working on it! I submitted three pieces and this one was my favorite of the three.
The opening reception and gala was last evening, and the show will run until next Saturday, March 7th.
