"Ukrainian Girl", 16x20, oil on linen

"Ukrainian Girl", 16x20, oil on linen

This painting is currently on exhibit at Art Center Sarasota's "Red Hot" exhibit. She is shown in her native costume, and I added some landscape effects in the background in keeping with the landscape of the Ukraine. I painted her last spring and was unsure whether or not I had done her justice. I think that over time I have seen my portraits grow more mature, and while i was happy with this painting at the time that I created it, I now see things about it that could have been improved. That, is a good thing!

I am hoping that David Leffel's workshop this coming week, will help me attain a new level in my portrait and still life paintings! We'll see!

"Cloudy Day Rose Garden", 12x16, oil on masonite

"Cloudy Day Rose Garden", 12x16, oil on masonite-$150
(Note: Click the photo to see the impasto in the painting)

I suspect that with the David Leffel workshop next week, I'll have very little time to post any new daily paintings. So this is probably the last daily painting that I'll do for a while. The week after the workshop, I am participating in a plein air invitational, so that will keep me pretty busy too, so this is most likely the last NEW painting that I'll be posting for a bit. That being said, I am really looking forward to getting back into some serious painting after about 6 months of having just a limited amount of time to paint!

Here is the reference photo that I used for the painting:

Yeah, I know I added a little more contrast than the day suggested. I guess I just can't help myself. I do love sunlight and the days that are cloudy are probably what I should really paint more of, since they force me to moderate my contrasts.

Anyhow, If you would like to purchase this painting, please use the Paypal button below.

By the way, I've priced it real cheap for its size and the amount of paint that I used on it, , since I really don't like cloudy day landscapes! :0)

Mission Magic, 14x11, oil on linen

"Mission Magic", 14x11, oil on linen-$375 plus $10s/h
Note: This looks really lovely in person, but the camera does not capture it!

I made some changes to the mission painting that I did last week, thanks to wonderful suggestions by my good friend and wonderful fellow artist, Julie Hanson. She showed me how to make believable shadows, something that has eluded me forever. Julie was my first teacher when I started painting four years ago, and I can thank her for everything that I know about color!

On a completely different tact, I am going to be taking an all -week workshop with acclaimed painter David Leffel next week, and I am so excited! The only problem with this is that in addition to the cost of the workshop (not cheap!) , I had to go out and buy a bunch of colors that I never use like venetian red and burnt umber and raw sienna and yellow ochre and naples yellow. So the workshop has cost me a small fortune and that is why I need to sell some more paintings this week! I am so anxious to learn how to have more finesse in my brushwork, and I am hoping that I can learn that from David, whose approach to brushwork is impeccable! So if you start seeing paintings next week that look pretty foreign to my usual genre, just know that I am on the road to improving my craft! I will never give up palette knife painting, however, but I do want to be more accomplished with a brush because I love to do portraits! So we shall see!

More about the mission painting: The first time I saw Mission San Juan Capistrano was about three years ago and it was love at first sight! The love affair is still going on strong and I doubt that this will be my last paitning of the mission either!

Here is the photo that I captured this past summer at a revisit to Capistrano:

The bougainvillea was in full bloom and my only disappointment was that there was so much of it, that it hid the bells that are in the courtyard with the fountain. The wall on the left hand side is part of the old adobe ruins, much of which was destroyed in an earthquake years ago. The yucca in the foreground made a nice contrast against all the pinks in the bougainvillea.

Destiny, 14x18

"Destiny", 14x18, oil on canvas panel-$425 plus $10 s/h

It's been a while since I've had time to paint due to person issues. I do believe that it is my destiny to paint, even though I started painting later in life. While I was painting this still life from life, I listened to the Susan Boyle CD that a friend gave me for Christmas. I am especially drawn to her song "Who I was born to Be" since I can certainly identify with that song. I truly believe that God gives us gifts that we are intended to use here on earth with which we can lift each other up. I do hope my art is one of those gifts, because it has been a passion of mine to paint since I was a young child.

Here are the lyrics to Susan's song. If you haven't heard it yet, it is truly a song that can speak to the soul of every creative and passionate person on the universe.

When I was a child
I could see the wind in the trees
and I heard a song in the breeze
it was there, singing out my name

But I am not a girl
I have known the taste of defeat
and I have finally grown to believe
it will all came around again

[Chorus:]
And though I may not
know the answers
I can finally say I am free
And if the questions

led me here, then
I am who I was born to be

And so here am I
Open arms and ready to stand
I've got the world in my hands
And it feels like my turn to fly

[Chorus]

When I was a child
there were flowers that
bloomed in the night
Unafraid to take in the light
Unashamed to have braved the dark

[Chorus]

I am who I was born to be
I am who I was born to be.
Lyrics: Who I Was Born to Be, Susan Boyle [end]
