When this lovely woman modeled for our portrait session a few weeks back, I could not help but admire her stoic smile, in spite of the fact that her sister had just passed away. I thought she was beautiful, with those lovely blue notes in the lights of her skin tones.
I couldn't do her justice at the time, with only a few short hours to capture her essence, but I knew I would have to try to paint her again, from both memory and the photograph that I had taken of her that day. My own sweet mother passed away on March 11th, the day of the Japanese earthquake, and this is the only painting that I have wanted to work on since I have come back to Florida.
Mom had wonderful caregivers, and this was a huge blessing to me, the oldest child, who moved to Florida, unaware that mom would be terribly sick within a few short years of my moving. I will be eternally grateful to my two sisters, Helen and Louise, and for the lovely caregivers who took care of mom over the past year, especially Dahlia and Margaret.
I thought of them constantly as I painted this young woman-sad yet stoic in spite of her feelings. There are truly angels amongst us. I believe that.
