"Gibson Girl",16x16, oil, first place, award-winning paintings, figurative, portrait, Gibson Girl, Maryanne Jacobsen art, paintings of women, Venice Art Center

"Gibson Girl",16x16, oil

I was so very delighted to receive a first place award last week for my painting, "Gibson Girl", 16x16, oil on wrapped linen. Out of over a hundred entries, mine was chosen for the top award at the Venice Art Center's Spring Member's show in Venice, Florida.

According to Wikipedia, "The Gibson Girl was the personification of the feminine ideal of physical attractiveness as portrayed by the pen-and-ink illustrations of artist Charles Dana Gibson during a 20-year period that spanned the late 19th and early 20th century in the United States and Canada.[1] The artist saw his creation as representing the composite of "thousands of American girls."

Here is a picture of Gibson's pen and ink sketch, "Gibson Girls at the Beach".

I was happy with the way the  painting turned out, but it is always a special thrill when another artist recognizes its merit as well. A special thank-you to artist Ron Goulet , who is a wonderful artist in his own right, and who was the juror for the event. His comments about the painting were the following: “Remarkable handling of color and composition calls you across the room and does not disappoint up close; excellent collectible piece of art.”

Here is a better photo of the painting:

"Misty Morning, Cortez Fishing Village", 11x14, oil on linen, award-winning paintings, Blue ribbon, fishing village, Cortez Village, Old Florida, old boats, fog, mist, fishing boats, Maryanne Jacobsen art

"Misty Morning, Cortez Fishing Village", 11x14, oil on linen

I was very happy to recently receive a First Place Award for my painting, "Misty Morning, Cortez Fishing Village", at the Englewood Art Center, a division of the Ringling College of Art and Education.

The origin of the painting goes back to a grey foggy morning when I gathered with a group of painters to paint scenes at the Cortez Fishing Village in Cortez Florida.

Cortez is a very popular spot for plein air painters, as it has the most delightful old fishing boats and scenes of Old Florida, not to mention The Starfish Grill on the Water, where artists can congregate after a happy day of painting on the rickety old piers.

This painting is available for purchase. Send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com if you are interested.

"Pigtails and Teddy Bears", 12x12, oil, paintings of little girls, toys, teddy bears, braids, pigtails, award-winning paintings

"Pigtails and Teddy Bears", 12x12, oil

Was very happy to find out that my painting "Pigtails and Teddy Bears" received a merit award last week at the Venice Art Center's Portrait and Figurative Exhibit, "The Human Condition". This is the third year in a row that I have received an award in this show, so I am grateful. There are many, many talented portrait and figurative artists that live in my area and enter this show, including Hodges, Soileau, Bill Farnworth, Jeff Cornell and many others, so I am always a little in awe to find that my work has been recognized amongst such a talented group of peers.

Thank-you to judge, Jon Greeley, for the recognition.

This painting is beautifully framed and can be purchased through the Venice Art Center. Feel free to email me at maryannejacobsen@aol.com for additional information.

"The Red House, Swim Beach", 6x6, oil , Monhegan Island, Venice Art Center, award-winning paintings, MAryanne Jacobsen art, boats, red

"The Red House, Swim Beach", 6x6, oil

Was delighted to find out that my little painting of the Red House on Monhegan Island was awarded second place in the Venice Art Center's Mini and Maxi show this evening.

I almost didn't enter the painting because I was confused about the size requirements for the show. Turns out that the paintings had to be either very large or very small. The painting that I took over to receiving was only an 11x14, but I soon learned it was too large. So I went home, picked up this little guy and brought him back to the art center.

So happy I did!

The painting is framed in a beautiful Randy Higbee floater frame and can be purchased through he Venice Art Center.  You can call them at 941-485-7136 for purchase information regarding this little gem.

Here I am at tonight's reception with good friend and fellow plein air painter Karen Hitt. Karen rec'd the third place ribbon for her lovely little watercolor of Venice. Congrats, Karen!

"Tuesday's at O'Leary's Tiki Bar", 12x16, oil, plein air, paintings of Florida, Tiki bar, O"Leary's Sarasota

SOLD

"Tuesday's at O'Leary's Tiki Bar", 12x16, oil on gessoboard, plein air
Note: This painting rec'd an honorable mention at the Venice Art Center's Spring Member's show.

I spent most of the afternoon at O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill in Sarasota. Now lest you get the wrong idea, I was painting, not drinking!

Twas another cold, windy day, which is why I tried to find the least windy spot on the bayfront to paint. Kids played ball in front of me, people came by and took pictures of me painting and one  inebriated fella tried to get a date with me.

When I got home I tried to pick some of the sand flies out of the paint, but after a while I gave up. I figured it's like having pepper with your salad- it adds a little flavor.

Here was the scene at O'leary's when I started:

I wish that they had left the umbrella up as I liked it better that way, but it was undoubtedly too windy to allow it.

Please email me at maryannejacobsen@com, if you would like to purchase a piece of Leary's Tiki Bar, at Sarasota's Bayfront-complete with sandflies added at no extra charge.

Update:  "Tuesday's at O'Leary's Tiki Bar" received a merit award at The Venice Art Center's "Art of Everyday Living" exhibit. Reception Friday 5PM, April12th

Sold through Collector's Gallery in downtown Venice.

I was pleased to find out that my lucky Mr. Clucky was chosen one of the TOP 100 in Paint America's annual national competition. So he'll be going on tour this year around the United States!

Last week Mr. Clucky also took a ribbon at The Windsor at Lakewood Ranch's third annual invitational art show , and he was juried into the American Impressionist Society's annual exhibit last fall, so he has been a good luck charm for me.
