I had painted this same scene about ten years ago, and decided to have another go at it. This was the result.

I remember that warm, wonderful glow that myself and my dancers felt after a successful performance. At West Chester Ballet Theatre, the company danced different ballets each year, with the exception of the Nutcracker which was an annual event and treat.

When you get a standing ovation at the end of a show, you know that all that hard work was worth it! Knowing you did your very best, and the audience loved it, lets the dancer know  it's time to rest those weary feet.

Those were special years when I was Artistic Director of West Chester Ballet Theatre, and these many years later, I still stay in contact with many of my students and their families.

Before my art career began, I was a dancer. I took ballet classes 4 to 5 times a week until I was in my mid-fifties, at which point I decided that painting was a lot easier on my joints than dancing. I was director of a large dance school for many years, and Artistic Director or a regional Ballet Company join the suburbs of of Philadelphia.

The love of dance never leaves you, once you get bitten by the dance bug. After moving to Florida and quitting ballet, I tried ballroom dancing with my husband. I absolutely loved it, but unfortunately, he hated it. So rather than look for a new partner, I quit as well. Today I still take line dance classes for fun and to keep my memory sharp, but it can't replace the joy I used to feel in ballet class.

The Tango is my favorite latin dance. It epitomizes the passion of the Latin people and the syncopated sultry rhythms of Spanish music.

I did enjoy painting this one, if only for the memories it brought back of thousands of dance classes over the years, and hours spent at the barre honing technique.

"Princess Aurora", 12x16, oil

Just finished this new commission and I am actually happy with it! "Actually", because I am usually pretty hard on myself. The painting portrays Princess Aurora, from "The Sleeping Beauty" ballet in attitude croise. This ballet, set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is an old Russian favorite, originally set to choreography by Petipa.

My own company, the West Chester Ballet Theatre, performed excerpts from it many years ago. The music is beautiful and the Garland Dance, danced by young girls with hoops festooned with garlands of flowers, was always my all-time favorite dance in the entire ballet.

This painting is sold, but I often do other paintings of dancer, so check back often.

I am having so much fun re-connecting to my former ballet students who are on Facebook, from my days when I was the artistic director of a ballet school and company in Pennsylvania. I painted this portrait of one of my students, Ashley Walker, in her red unitard. The painting took a second place ribbon in an art show about a year ago...


The painting really can't do her justice, and I think since I am a little more accomplished this year, than I was when I painted this, I may try it again. I can now look at the photo of her and see that I didn't get the tilt of the head quite right, and I made the neck a little long. I recall that it took forever for me to paint the hands!Sheesh! When will hands get easier?

I am very, very happy to see that my former students are doing well in the ten plus years since I've last seen them!

Ready to Dance!- ballet art

Les Sylphides, 8x10, oil on gallery-wrapped canvas

Back in the mid-nineties my ballet company performed Les Sylphides, a one act ballet of short dances to the music of Chopin. There were 3 female soloists, one male, and 18 corps dancers, called "Sylphs" in the ballet. The girls in the company all got a huge kick out of the little wings attached to the backs of their tutus, although they thought the ballet itself was pretty boring.

This painting would make a lovely gift for that special ballerina in your life!
