"Where the Robins Sing", 24x24, oil on masonite, still life, outdoor still life, garden art, wine, strawberries, pink flowers, original art, Maryanne Jacobsen art

"Where the Robins Sing", 24x24, oil on masonite

This colorful garden still life was painted a few years ago and has nice impasto passages throughout. The birds were singing in the trees beyond the fence, and there was the tiniest hint of fall in the air that day. The glass of cabernet was the perfect ending to my painting session and I even ate the strawberries!

Artists and their art continue to bring beauty into the world through their creativity, imagination and skill. Thank-you for supporting my work and I hope you have a wonderful day!

"Venetian Light", 12x16, oil on masonite, gondolier, Venice canal, canal reflections, Maryanne Jacobsen art, paintings of Venice

"Venetian Light", 12x16, oil on masonite

This was a quick study of a complex scene, painted a few years ago. I wanted to simplify the scene so that the light at the back of the canal was the dominant centerpiece of the scene, rather than getting bogged down in a lot of details. I also experimented with  some earth colors like raw sienna and terra rosa, and found it advantageous to have earth colors on the palette when painting the ochres of Venice. It was a quick study of a complex scene, and taking it out today and refining it a bit was helpful, I think.

"Autumn on Shrimp Boat Lane", 12x16, oil on masonite, Shem's Creek, Shrimp Boat Lane, Mt. Pleasant Island, boats, Charleston, marine art

"Autumn on Shrimp Boat Lane", 12x16, oil on masonite

This is a painting that I did a year or so ago and was never really happy with. So I took it out and worked on it a bit yesterday and corrected the errors.

It's always a relief to me to be able to take out a painting after a while and be able to figure out what went wrong the first time. It certainly helps me know that I am still progressing.  I lightened up some of the shadows, especially on the fish house and corrected the drawing in a few places. I also noted that the value of the floating dock was too dark so I lightened that as well.

This is a painting of Shrimp Boat Lane on Mt. Pleasant Island  near Charleston. Also known as Shem's Creek, it is a very colorful place with ample painting subjects for an artist!

"Country French", 12x16, oil on masonite, bicycle, bread, baguette, French countryside, Normandy, French landscapes

"Country French", 12x16, oil on masonite

Painted this before Thanksgiving and have not posted it because I wasn't sure if I should make changes to it. I think I've decided to leave it alone, at least for now. I altered the composition somewhat By putting the tree in the foreground to connect the darks but then I wasn't sue if it worked or not.

I think this is one of those paintings that I should put away for 6 months or so, and then take it out with a set of fresh eyes. I loved the contrast of the French peasant with the baguette in the basket, against the stately French country estate.

This was painted with a palette knife only.
