"Fond Memories", 12x24, oil
I was recently commissioned to paint a memento of a very special family home that was about to be sold. The house, on Cape Cod, held many pleasant memories for my client and thus it needed to be memorialized in paint.
Painting a portrait of something as near and dear to a person as a family home is always a bit stressful for me, but in my past experiences the outcome has been worth my stress as the owners are always joyful to have a little concrete memory to retain.
I took my time with this one, studied the photographs, made preliminary sketches in pencil and even painted a small 9x12 paint sketch to make sure I had thoroughly familiarized myself with my subject matter. In the end, my client was very happy with the painting and so for me it was well worth the effort.
If you would like a portrait of your own family home painted, just send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com and we can discuss the process!

"Summer Moonrise", 12x24, oil on board, Impressionism, California trees, eucalyptus trees, Maryanne Jacobsen art, Moonrise, summer moon

If you read my blog, you'll know that I have an ongoing love for eucalyptus trees. They have a lyrical quality in the way they nod carry themselves- sometimes nodding their heads like naughty children and more often then not curling and twisting like a dancer performing a strange adagio.
This is another painting of a eucalyptus cluster. it was painted on a board and has soft muted colors and texture throughout.

"Peach Blush", 12x24, oil on birch panel, paintings of eucalyptus trees, California eucalyptus, sunset blush, Maryanne Jacobsen art, California landscapes, impressionism
"Summer Moonrise", 12x24, oil on birch panel
My love affair with eucalyptus trees continues with "Peach Blush". These trees remind me of ballet dancers- willowy and graceful. Their limbs are evocative of the épaulement of a ballet dancer, demonstrating style and mystery as they bend from their twisting, bending trunks in much the same way a dancer uses her shoulders, neck and head to create different illusions of carriage.
This was painted with palette knife only, and has beautiful passages of impasto throughout.

"Eventide", 12x24, oil on linen, Eucalptus trees, cypress trees, California landscapes, MAryanne Jacobsen fine art
SOLD
"Eventide", 12x24, oil on linen
This was painted a while back and is still a favorite of mine. The trees in California are so beautiful- from the willowy Eucalptus trees like the ones above to the gnarly, twisted cypress trees that flourish along the windy coasts- I think if I lived in California, I'd be outdoors every day, painting trees!
Please send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com if you would like to commission a painting similar to Eventide.

"Carlsbad Morning", 12x24, oil on canvas, Batiquitos Lagoon, Carlsbad California, eucalyptus trees
"Carlsbad Morning", 12x24, oil on canvas
Throughout southern California there are great places to hike. Whenever we visit the area, my son and daughter-in-law, who are avid hikers, introduce us to a new trail. Some of our favorites are Torrey Pines and Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlbad. There are beautiful old eucalyptus trees through out Batiquitos, so I took the opportunity to take some pictures of them since they are my favorite California tree.
The Lagoon boasts plenty of nature trails for bird-watching and hiking and kayak enthusiasts are welcome as well. To learn more about the lagoon , please go here.

"Morning in Umbria", 12x24, oil on canvas
On the knolls where the vineyards and fruit-gardens are
There's a beauty that even the drought cannot mar;
For I noticed it oft, in the days that are lost,
As I trod on the siding where lingered the frost,
When the shadows of night from the gullies were gone
And the hills in the background were flushed by the dawn.
-from "Above Eurunderee" by Henry Lawson
There is something lovely about a vineyard in the morning light. The earth breathes out color and abundance and the promise of the ripened vine, which will bring forth the delightful wine that helps celebrate our victories while comforting our sorrows.
This painting was done with palette knife and brush and has passages of brilliant color interspersed with the neutrals of the receding hills.
This painting is available through Gallery 444 in San Francisco. You may contact them at for pricing information at (415) 434-4477.
