Here is another painting that I did during my recent trip to Pennsylvania, as I painted as a juried artist in the Farm to Table Plein Air event.

This was a lovely property on the outskirts of West Chester that had numerous out buildings, a Springhouse, barn and gorgeous historical home. The morning was incredibly bright and sunny but just as incredibly windy. I chose to paint the barn because I liked the overlapping tree shape against the roofline and the light and shadow patterns.

But I found that it was all I could do to hold onto my easel, and it managed to blow over twice before I finally realized that I had to hold it with one hand and paint with my other hand. My brush washer holding my solvent took off as a flying projectile at one point, and the grass and my apron were instantly sprayed with solvent. I also lost the S-clip that held my brush washer to my easel and that annoyed me greatly since I knew I'd have to paint the rest of the trip with the solvent holder on the ground. Only a big deal if you have a bad back, which I do.

The lady painting behind me (a pastel painter)  had brought a brick, and she used that to weight down her easel. I didn't have a brick, and so I painted the entire time with the disadvantage of having no more solvent and having to hold onto my easel for dear life.

The painting progressed anyway, but I knew I'd have to make some corrections to the perspective in the end, because I couldn't adequately measure and paint with only one hand free.

With all that green, I knew some vivid color was needed, and since there was evidence that some marigolds and day lillies had been planted around the barn and fence, I took the liberty to embellish their growth in the painting.

I have to admit that that was the fun part of this painting- putting some flowers in at the end. In addition to losing  my solvent and S-clip, I ended up with poison ivy on my arms as a result of scouring around afterwards and trying to find the little clip! (Which I never did find.)

I painted this scene recently while visiting Pennsylvania's Amish country. The carriage house sat back from the road and was surrounded by an abundance of day lillies.  A day lily is so named because the flower that opens in the morning only lasts one day! This would be sad if the lillies were not so prolific!

Anyhow, here is my plein air sketch of the scene:

I used water-soluble oils when I was traveling last week, but decided to re-paint the scene using traditional oils. The water-soluble oils are great for traveling, but I'll never give up my traditional oils.

This was painted during a trip to Chester County. I was intrigued by the shadows on the ground and the colorful foliage.

During my recent painting trip to Pennsylvania, I had the opportunity to paint a couple times in the sweet little historic village of Yellow Springs, Pennsylvania. The weather was gorgeous and the trees were colorful and my only dilemma was choosing what to paint in the tiny village!

I decided to set up in the little courtyard between the Washington Building and the Lincoln Building, since the dappled light on the side on the Washington Building fascinated me.

As is usually the case with plein air, by the time, I set up my easel and got around to painting, the light on the building was gone and the building and courtyard were cast in shadow with the exception of the little bench.

Here is what it looked like in less than an hour's time:

Since I was unable to capture the dappled light that had first attracted me to the scene, I decided to paint the scene in my studio, using my field study and photo reference for guides.

 I was pretty happy with the outcome, and hope to do more autumn scenes in upcoming weeks from the trip to beautiful Pennsylvania.

I painted this a few years back, on a day that I was feeling nostalgic about my old home back in Chester Springs, Pa. The area is beautiful, dotted with rolling hills, horse farms and little springhouses atop babbling brooks. This farm was not far from my own homestead and I often went past it on my daily walks.

I depicted it in late summer, with a field of nasturtium in the foreground, and the willow tree just beginning to shed some leaves in preparation for the colder months.

School House LAne is a short little lane off St. Matthews Rd., in Chester Springs, Pa. It leads into Birchrunville, a scenic and tiny little town with a post office, antique store and cafe. This road was very familiar to me when I lived nearby on Houndstooth Lane. We would often ride our bikes here on the way into Birchrunville for the annual Fourth of July parade.

I painted this scene of an overcast fall day, because I loved how the color or the reddish bushes stood out against the  dark tree trunks. I hope you enjoy this scene as much as I enjoyed painting it.

Just realized that there are still paintings from my painting trip up north in October of last year that I haven't posted yet.

This one is one of them. St. Matthews Rd. is near and dear to my heart as my kids used to sled on the hills along there when we lived just off the road, the annual Thanksgiving Charleston Hunt of the hounds would go through there in the fall, and the good Doctor Rosato (who lived on the road) and his lovely wife would ride through there on their gorgeous antique sleighs during holidays, ringing sleigh bells and delighting all the kids along the way.

It's a very scenic and winding  country road and this red roofed barn is a favorite structure of mine.

Haven't posted in a while because I've been busy with family stuff, but will try to catch up a little over the next couple weeks.

I just returned from Pennsylvania where I participated in  the Plein Air Brandywine Valley art competition and sale to benefit Children's Beach House in Wilmington , Delaware. It was my second year of doing this competition and every year is wonderful because of the exceptional places that the artists are allowed to paint. People generously offer to open up their private estates to the artists, where we can paint vistas of horses, donkeys, old barns, classic Pennsylvania fieldstone farmhouses, hay stacks and much more.

It's a beautiful time of year, with the fall foliage at full peak. Hence the name of the painting above which was painted at the Nielsen estate in Chadds Ford, Pa., home to generations of Wyeth families. I was drawn to the interesting shape of the twisted tree as well as the companion tree on the other side of the winding path, which was in full fall gala garb!

The week of painting culminates in a gala, held at the Winterthur Museum, where people who purchase tickets can choose from literally dozens or gorgeous plein air paintings available for purchase.

Unfortunately, I only painted 4 paintings this year, since two of the days were cold and rainy and I have Raynaud's disease, which is a circulatory problem that prevents me from going outdoors in cold and damp weather. But I was happy with the paintings that I did on Monday and Tuesday, and one of them was purchased by a collector.

This scene looks out over the pond and stables at the Strawbridge's Hetheridge Farm on St. Matthews Road in Chester Springs, Pa. It also happens to be the scene that I used to look at every day from my back yard when I lived in Horseshoe Farm in Chester Springs.





 The sun always came up over the pond in the morning,and the reflections of the pines on the far bank against the sky color reflecting into the pond was pretty amazing.

This painting was done a couple years ago, but I took it out yesterday and re-worked it slightly. I then posted a picture of the revised painting on Facebook and it sold right away.

I'm guessing that I'll miss looking at this painting, which has been hanging in my home for a while, just as I still miss looking out the back windows of my old home at the lovely pond at Horseshoe Farm.

I loved the dappled light across this old springhouse. I had painted this a while back, but took it out today and messed with it a little bit. It's a wonderful old building, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, brimming with charm and character.

This is a painting I did last winter of a scene from the backyard of my old house in Chester Springs, Pa. I was never happy with how the painting came out, so I pulled it out this week and worked on it some more. I added some glazes, falling leaves and a sunbeam and it looks really pretty now. I also just discovered that my old house has gone on the market recently. I'd always thought I'd try to buy it back if it ever came on the market, but now I realize that I'm totally hooked on the blue skies and eternal sunshine that we have 95% of the time here in Southwest Florida. So I'll keep my lovely memories of Pennsylvania tucked away in my brain, and stay put here in the Sunshine state.
