"Afternoon Light-Mission Capistrano", 16x12, oil on board by Maryanne Jacobsen

SOLD
"Afternoon Light-Mission Capistrano", 16x12, oil on board by Maryanne Jacobsen

This is the newest of my Mission San Juan Capistrano paintings. I just love that old mission! You can click on the image to see the painting better. I painted it with both brush and palette knife. It was a complex scene for a couple reasons. The old adobe part of the mission where the bells are located is definitely unusual in terms of architecture. So I always feel challenged when I try to capture the colors and the shape of the structure. The wall of the courtyard was more straightforward, but the combination of contrasting colors and perspective of the three adjoining buildings challenged me a bit. I had fun with the bougainvillea and the aloe plant in the foreground though.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is located in southern California in Orange County, about an hour north of San Diego and just south of Laguna Beach. I have visited it three or four times and never grow tired of that beautiful place. It is a national treasure and historic monument, and most people have heard the beautiful legend about the swallows that return there every year to nest. The Old Springhouse, 16x12, oil on board by Maryanne Jacobsen, paintings of old buildings, light and shadow, springhouse paintings

"The Old Springhouse", 16x12, oil on board

I have been so busy lately that I have found it hard to post regularly on my blog. I actually have quite a few new paintings that I have not had time to even post! Hopefully things are getting a bit calmer and I'll get back into a more regular routine soon!

This is a painting of an old springhouse that was up the road from my last house in Chester Springs, Pa. The building may be old but it has a tremendous amount of character, and with the dappled light cascading over it, I knew immediately that I wanted to paint it. I have painted a smaller study of it before, but this one I took my time on. Here's the smaller study that I did a while back:

In case you are not familiar with what a springhouse is, here's a definition from Wikipedia: A spring house, or springhouse, is a small building used for refrigeration once commonly found in rural areas before the advent of electric refrigeration. It is usually a one-room building constructed over the source of a spring. The water of the spring maintains a constant cool temperature inside the spring house throughout the year. In settings where no natural spring is available, another source of natural running water, such as a small creek or diverted portion of a larger creek, may be used. The main use of a spring house is for the long-term storage of food that would otherwise spoil, such as meat, fruit or dairy products.

"Time to Go", 14x11, oil on canvas board, by Maryanne Jacobsen

SOLD"Time to Go", 14x11, oil on canvas board

Today I officially put the final touches on the second commissioned painting for the Ritz Carlton.

Yay! I'm officially done! (Save retouch varnish in a week or so...)

Once the work was done, I wanted to just painting something simple, beautiful and fun. (and smallish!) Since I've been working on beach paintings of late, it was natural for me to want to use the left over paint on my palette to continue in the same vein I'd been in for the past week or so. So I decided upon a scene I was well familiar with-(Venice Beach, Florida) and a bird that I am also well familiar with (Great Blue Heron) and voila! I had a new painting in no time at all!

This one exudes freedom, just like the bird taking flight.

I hope that you like it, too.

Path through the Sea Oats, 16x12, oil on board, by Maryanne Jacobsen

Path through the Sea Oats, 16x12, oil on board

I have been working on two large paintings, which were commissioned for the Ritz Carlton hotel in Naples, Florida, and I needed to take a break from all the concentration that a commissioned piece requires. So this was the result. It's a happy little piece that I did with a palette knife last evening and I just let go with all the color that I recalled from painting the scene en plein air at Siesta Key Beach a while back. In autumn the sea oats turn a beautiful shade of warm magenta and the effect is glorious.

If you are interested in this piece, please send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com, or visit my website at Maryanne Jacobsen Fine Art if you wish to see more of my original oil paintings.
