"Cottage Garden", 5x7, oil on wrapped canvas

SOLD

"Cottage Garden", 5x7, oil on wrapped canvas

In this painting, I tried to leave the background veiled in mystery, so that the foreground red flowers could take the throne. The goal in the painting was to create contretemps in the way in which the blues are punctuated by the reds.

I much enjoyed doing this painting, and listened to Elton John's Greatest Hits as I painted away. My favorite song on the mega-double CD is "Guess that's why they call it the blues". Not a huge hit, but I really like the beat- kept me singing and dancing along as I mixed these blue-sy mixtures.....

Lyrics below:

Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever
Between you and me
I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won't be long
Before you and me run
To the place in our hearts
Where we hide

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second
Without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man

Without me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

"Allegro", 11x14, oil on linen by Maryanne Jacobsen, paintings of dancers, modern dance, contemporary dance

"Allegro", 11x14, oil on linen

I haven't done any serious painting in a long while. Blame it on the methane fumes in the Gulf of Mexico, or the fact that I have not been feeling very inspired recently, thanks to wordly conditions. That being said, I do pray everyday, and today the Lord allowed me to finish this painting of a ballerina dancing a contemporary piece.

I love ballet. It is so beautiful. But there is something incredibly strong and athletic in contemporary dance that is a bit harder to detect in ballet, which when done correctly appears so effortless that strength and athleticism become invisible to the untrained eye.

Not sure if any of that makes sense. At any rate, I miss ballet class. Hopefully there's a ballet class somewhere in heaven, waiting for me, with my bunions and bad knees, and taught by Margarita de SaĆ”, my favorite teacher, ballerina extraordinaire, and a beautiful and compassionate human being as well.

"Divertissement" ,abstract floral by Maryanne Jacobsen

SOLDRoses in a Blue Vase with oranges, 10x10, oil on linen

Finally today, after months of being unable to paint, I turned out a painting that I'm somewhat happy with. I think I need to submit a claim to BP for lack of inspiration as a result of the ecotage that's been perpetrated in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Sofia's Memories" paintings of women in costume, paintings of Ukrainian women

"Sofia's Memories", 16x20, oil on linen

This painting of a young Ukrainian woman in festive costume, has undergone quite a few revisions since I first painted it back in 2008. So I decided that the painting deserved a new name. The thatched roof building, and far off windmill are memories of old Ukraine, and the memories are triggered by the colorful garb that the woman has donned for festival celebrations, hence the new title.

Here is what she looked like before the revisions:

As you can see she's a new woman, and although many people liked her in her original state, I was never happy with the small mouth and the bleached out skin tones.

If you would like to purchase this painting, please send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com

"Ukrainian Girl" in Native Costume, 16x20, oil on linen. ethnic art, portraits of beautiful women, women in costume, Maryanne Jacobsen original art

"Ukrainian Girl in Native Costume", 16x20, oil on linen

I had started this painting quite a while back, but was never completely satisfied with it, so I took it out last week and started re-working it a bit to see what would evolve. I am not sure that the above version is actually finished, hence I am not offering it for sale at this time. But it is definitely an improvement over the original!

Have a wonderful holiday!
