This painting was painted on location on a very windy autumn day in Wilmington, Delaware, at the beautiful Winterthur Museum, former home of the wealthy DuPont family. I recall it being windy because my easel blew over three times that day!

Below is an image of the brick overlook in Daffodil season. 

My favorite time to paint at Winterthur is in the fall when the colors are incredibly vibrant. 

In keeping with the scene, the colors in the painting are vibrant and warm, and the painting would add a sense of light and energy to any  room! It is being sold unframed, but framing options are available for an additional charge.

This beautiful gal modeled for a group of us artists a few years back at Historic Spanish Point, in Osprey, Florida. She stood against the door of the old boathouse, just as the afternoon sun was sending wonderful diagonal patterns against the shadowed walls. A piece of light from her white blouse reflected back up into the underside of her nose, and the effect was captivating.

I knew I'd get around to painting her again eventually. Just surprised that it took about 5 years!

Whenever the dog days of a Florida summer get me down, I endeavor to find that special place in a different part of the world, where I can escape the humidity and torrid heat of Florida summers.

In this case I chose aa shadowy alcove in a sunlit courtyard, shaded from the heat but still fragrant with summer scents and lit with warm reflected light. It could be anywhere in Greece, Italy, Provence, maybe.

But wherever it is, it is a happy place and I am going to stay there for a while with my glass of wine!

I had painted something similar to this in a smaller format some years back, and really enjoyed trying to capture that elusive Provencial light that makes artists gasp for joy when visiting Provence. So I determined to paint the scene again, this time in a much larger format than before.

I  must say that I thoroughly enjoyed painting this. It was painted with mostly a palette knife and has thick passages of paint throughout.

I recently discovered a new hybrid rose variety that I absolutely love. They are called esperanza roses.

They are delightfully pink on the top and then have shades of cream and apple green on the petals. I picked up a bunch of the in the supermarket and painted them recently in a green vase which i converted into a pitcher for artistic reasons. The watermelon was a nice compliment to the set-up and I was really happy with the way the painting turned out.

This was such a joy to paint today after the last two weeks.

Never mind what that means!

Sometimes it's important to just paint what you love, and in the manner in which you are comfortable!

Then it's easy and the result is satisfactory. For this one I changed up my palette a bit. I used yellow ochre, cad yellow pale, can orange, napthol red, permanent rose, cobalt violet, ultramarine blue, king's blue and  viridian. I am going to be tempted to go back into it tomorrow and re-work some of the passages, but I think I'll force myself to let it alone, since it looks loose and impressionist.

Almost 15 years ago, my hubby and I took a wonderful trip to Europe which included time spent in France, Germany and Denmark. One of the highlights of that trip was time spent in the Alsace region of France. I'll never forget the trip up Mont Sainte-Odile to see the dramatic sight of the monastery,  where , as legend has it, Sainte Odile was given sanctuary from a brutal father, who wanted to kill his own daughter because she was blind.

Another highlight of that trip to the Alsace region was La Petite France, a section of the old city of Strasbourg, which is filled with canals reminiscent of Venice, Italy and studded with ancient multi-storied buildings that have stood for centuries in shades of pink, ochre and magenta under hazy skies.

Alsace is a little German or a little French depending on who was currently in control during those years of its schizophrenic history when both countries jockeyed back and forth for control of the area.

This scene that I've painted a few times before depicts a classic Alsace window, framed in colorful wooden shutters with flowers and abundant vines cascading in and out of cheerful chaos.
